Women empowerment: building sisterhood in Spain beyond bias, traditions and organisations

Last week All Ladies League Punjab Entrepreneurship Chapter organised the most important event of the year “The power of Sisterhood” in the framework of the traditional Indian celebrations of Shakti Bandhan. World Sisterhood Day. A tradition that has been exported worldwide by the Women Economic Forum thanks to technology, globalisation, goodwill, and the work and vision of charismatic Founder and Leader Dr Harbeen Arora. In the last twenty years, it has “knitted a robe” of faith, sisterhood, and exchange. That is precisely the dream –now a reality- create a global women network that allows the union among women across the world within determination and strong links based on voluntarism and trust –on WEF and on the capacity to change current women status quo that lacks support and sense of integration -. Beyond religions, traditions, cultures, ideologies.

A chant of solidarity and empathy among women, honoured the divine feminine within the engagement of Shiva, the divine masculine liberated from cultural or religious constraints. In the words of Dr. Harbeen Arora the purpose of the organization and sense of all our actions:

“It is not an agenda against men, it’s a fight against the society’s mindset, irrational practices and ill customs that stop women from leading their life on their terms and the same can’t be achieved without the involvement of men”

However, is not the usual path taken by all societies. Gender equality is considered a threat for a conservative mind, exacerbated by the role that many women has wrongly adopted, making of politics or/and civil society organisations a patrimony of ideological interests rather than working towards knitting a culture of understanding and empathy among women. This twofold road to achieving resilience need to be changed, not just for the design of policies but also for the structure of women´s organisations in itself, building a true sense of sisterhood and global union.

Sadly, is it when we jump into a 2d stage on the women´s fight against society´s mindset that we face rejection, suspicion, and fear. Spanish society is a clear example of it. Most of the Spanish women organisations are political or politically biased without a sense of helping each other or intention to thrive by looking at innovative and global platforms or just by reshaping their rusty structures. Competition and rivalry are key to the achievement of their goals and surprisingly helpful to keep their decadent status quo.

I lived the experience by my own, last year on the occasion of presenting WEF at a group of women organisations in Spain (please see my article “Catalonia, gender equality and politics”) ….I was shocked. They see us as “another organisation” to compete for funds, parcels of power, or/and leadership in Media. I was surprised that there was not a common goal on a basic principle for WEF/All Ladies League:“women empowering women” . Is our understanding that is the only driver to change and strengthen any action or policy. Is it for this experience and all lived along the last months working on building ALL Ladies /WEF Spain that I realise that there it is more than just incapacity to pursue a goal of women sisterhood but the own Spanish culture that resists accepting innovative platforms and new frameworks. Not because of their people precisely, open, creative, innovative, and charming but because of a rigid structure that does not allow them to grow their inner creativity. Not even for their organisation, to become different, dynamic, less bureaucratic, and a center of empowerment. On the contrary, it becomes rusty, attached to heavy mechanisms, and in the end,  not able to switch into global structures and become one with the rest of the world.

Spanish people are like a precious heart in a sickening body

Is the sad conclusion that acquires especially emphasis within COVID19 times in which creativity and innovation are the main drivers to succeed and a source of hope for the people to move forward beyond ideologies.

Introducing the concept of sisterhood within the strong roots of India’s philosophy of living and passion towards voluntarism, taking into account the particular needs of Spanish society without losing the richness of their style, personality, and courage to face challenges.

Building WEF/ALL ladies league in Spain.

Rescuing the precious heart.
